Technology Addiction
Addiction, in the broadest of terms, is an obsession with a particular substance, thing or an activity. Television, although commonly disregarded as a serious issue, can become a very real problem in today's society. It is quite common for people to go out of their way to catch the premiere of their favourite TV show, the time wasted mindlessly watching TV could have easily been put towards developing stronger social relationships with other people, our ability to socialize has been diminished greatly due to technology.
However, television only covers a tiny portion of the negative impact technology has in our society. Everyday we find ourselves surrounded by media, electronics and hundreds of other technological advances which ultimately increase our dependency on technology. A common misconception is that for one to be addicted, they must be involved in drugs, gambling or even certain daily routines, this is not true. Although many do not realize it, an addiction to television can negatively impact your life just as gravely as drugs. We will never gain back the time we've wasted watching TV, we become a vegetable, confined to the comfort of our couch, the lack of physical activity alone should put many off of excessive television watching, but it does not.
The essay "Eye Tricks" does not provide us with an anachronistic point of view, the dependency on television for entertainment is still very prevalent amongst society's youth and this dependency can even be found among older groups of people. For some, watching TV or engaging in other media related activities acts as a way of blocking out the "real world". We emerge ourselves within the fantasies provided by media in a pathetic attempt of avoiding what is really happening around ourselves, we feel worry free and develop a passive mental state. The health of frequent TV watchers is distinctly lower then the health of someone who partakes in social relationships and seizes the opportunities available to them to engage in physical activity. So long as technology exists, addiction will always be relevant issue in our society.
